Laughter is the best medicine
And that’s no joke. Studies have shown that a regular laugh strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh.
Humour takes the stress out of situations, inspires hope, and connects you with others. Laughing will keep you grounded, focused, and alert. And, if that was not enough, psychologists also point out that it helps you release anger and forgive sooner. Laughing will stimulate many organs, activate, and relieve your stress response, and soothe tensions.
The long-planned No Barriers September event had the same inspiration.
So, in times like these, “a frankly terrible year” as the Prime Minister said, how do you keep your sense of humour?
Easy. Put humour on your horizon – with books, clippings and TV turned to quick laughs. Find the humour wherever you go and share your laughter with others. Choose to respond to mishaps with a joke. But also know what isn’t funny and walk away. Go ahead, try it. Begin by lifting the corners of your mouth. Now have a chuckle. See, it isn’t that hard, is it? 😊

While we cannot quite go back to ‘normal’ again for the foreseeable future, the Aotea Family Support Group will adapt all activities to government recommendations and restrictions.
Young people will be supported as they return to school and suitable social activities for older residents will also start again. Our Tryphena office and that of the community worker in Claris will partly reopen under level 2 and general support will be available as required. But please call us rather than call in, whenever possible.

Keep your brain sharp
If you are stuck at home, then don’t loose touch with others altogether. How about writing a letter? Or play a live game online.
Know someone that might feel alone? Then find an excuse to give them a call and have a chat.
Or maybe now is the time to write down your memories? How about as a series of letters to your (future) grandchildren?
